WHAT?!!
I know it sounds like a horrible lie, but when I can drag myself to the gym (do not judge me on this week's attendance) I have been running. Amy is running as well, and doing quite well. And we both really like it. I think the goal is to eventually run a 5K, which is longer than it sounds. We'll see. Amy even made a running mix for the iPod because Amy was sick of getting shanghaied by Rufus Wainwright and songs from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode while she was working out. It is quite good. If you ever need a workout mix, talk to her. A little Kelly Clarkson, a little Aerosmith, and when you really need a push, some Melissa Ethridge. She runs for you mother, your sister, your wife. And so will you when you hear her sing about out-running cancer.
Jonah likes running too. Today he was such a lunatic little boy that I finally told him to go outside and run laps around the yard. And he did. And when I saw him slowing down I would yell out the window, "Keep going!" And he would.
Amy's good friend Amanda told us about an event hosted in the area by the high school track teams. Amanda's husband Tony is a track coach, so he should know. Every Tuesday afternoon there is a free cross country run for kids. They break the kids into age groups, assign each group some "rabbits" (high school track kids to lead the race) and off they go. The distance they run is reasonable for a pre-K kid, but it is not short. This is not your grandma's fun run. The first time the boys went, they were raring to go.
At the starting pistol (and yes, they do use a real pistol. And yes it makes me incredibly nervous, even though I know it is incapable of firing anything. This is why I vote Democrat.) they were off. And after about 20 feet, Noel was done. He had that realization that all non-runners have of "Why am I doing this?" and was back to wait out the outcome of the race with Amy.
Look at those legs go!
One thing I love/drives me crazy about Jonah is his determination. He wants to accomplish things on his terms. And when he is working at something, there is no joy, just single-minded focus and drive. That is why he often cries when he tries to make toys into some gravitationally impossible stack and they keep falling over, and he keeps trying (and crying) no matter how many time you tell him that the laws of physics will prevent that tower he is building from ever standing up. The second race was long. It would have winded me. Tony had to carry one of his kids over the finish line on his shoulders. (Tony runs the race with his kids. Remember, he is a track coach. I just watch. Remember, I am a novice runner.) And even though Jonah looked exhausted, he was determined to finish strong.

That is the sweetest face! So earnest! Yeah running! (It works with Owen. . ."OH, ONE MORE LAP! You can do it!")
It works with Lindsay too, although some one at that PhD school of her's got her wise to it and now she has me out there running but she says it makes her tired to watch. And so, when I'm just at the end and I've long passed "The Wall" (the Pink Floyd one) and I am coughing up blood, I think, 'If I'm this tired, IMAGINE what she feels!' Then I run some more. Just to show her who's boss.

I miss you Bings! You commentary on life is priceless. Priceless like the Caritas & Mr. Happy in Ladispols. That is how priceless you are.
That is so fun that you're all running! I was running before I broke my toe this summer. (Whimper) Will I ever run again?
Josh, Surprise surprise, it's your brother in-law in Colorado. I wonder how how I rank on your list of "least likely to read blogs, eventually find yours, and actually comment"? I would enjoy a response from you on that and see if I'm down there below or above people like your two brothers in SLC. And no, I probably don't read more than one blog a week and maybe only one entry on that blog at that time, so maybe 5 min a week if those bloggers are lucky :-)
Anyway, I enjoy reading things that you and your brother in Salem write because of how you write it and not necessarily what you write about. But today IS about the content. The reason why I'm responding today is to let you know that my heart jumped with when I read this post about you and your family exercising and specifically RUNNING. I could be wrong but I don't believe this has been part of your regimen for most of your life. I am slowly getting back into exercising but being a jock and I guess former runner, with my claim to fame being a finisher of the St. George Marathon in 1992, I get excited about what people gain from running. I truly feel that running not only teaches you so much about life but also makes you a better, stronger, happier person; Among other things because of simply the personal/mental win you have over the conflict of self discipline, to get up an go when everything in your body, the world, and satan is saying "nah, why should you, it's too hard, it hurts, just stay there and keep clicking the remote?"
So I'm inspired by your post and feel energized to increase the speed of my return to being fit, feeling good, and winning that battle. If there's a will there's a way. -jd
