We did it. We bought a house. After the successful selling of our house last week, we decided to head out to rainy Portland to find a place to live. We were greatly inspired by the fact that we need to be out of our house by the 21st and want to limit the amount of time we live in our in-laws basement. Our in-laws are lovely to offer to let us live in their basement (actually I don't think they offered - I think we just told them we were moving in,) but we hate to wear out our welcome. We flew in on Wednesday and went house hunting like an episode of House Hunters on crack, except without Susanne Wong reminding us of which houses we liked and which we didn't. By the end of the day we were exhausted, and all the houses were starting to blur together. Our conversations sounded something like this:"Which house did we like?"
"The one with the alcove."
"Did it have a kitchen?"
"Yes."
"But not the one with the bassett hound and the owner's underwear laying on the floor, right?"
"Right."We really had narrowed it down to three. (Just like on House Hunters!) Which one would we choose:
A) Seventies home on a big lot.
B) Newer development with a little yard
C) Charming neighborhood, charming home, perfect!

Which one did we choose?...(cue House Hunters' theme song)...
The charming home in the charming neighborhood!
We are thrilled. It is the right size, for the right price, in a really cute neighborhood that seems to have a lot of kids. It is in a good ward and in a great stake. (Chanel's stake, to be exact.) There is a Trader Joe's 5 minutes away, a Costco 10 minutes away, and 2 Target's, each within 3 miles. What more do you need?!?!
We made an offer, and it was accepted. So we are moving...gulp. We are terrified, but happy and relieved to know that we have somewhere to live that we are excited about. There is a 4th bedroom, so come and visit! No, not you, creepy random blog reader. I am referring to our lovely friends and family.
I will post more pics and info soon. I am getting on a plane.
I call him Touchy McToucherton. Not original, I know. He came into my life yesterday. We are still getting used to each other. I keep looking for a click wheel. And he keeps wondering why I watch reruns of old TV shows all day (Popular, anyone?) But I have a feeling that this will be a long and beautiful relationship.
Special thanks to my lovely wife and Special Ops Agent/Swashbuckler Malley for making this happen.
Well, my week of work is done and I am sitting in PDX, my home away from home, waiting for my flight back to the winter wonderland of Salt Lake. I got here about 3 hours early anticipating crazy lines and hold ups, and promptly walked right through security, found a comfy bench and have been listening to holiday carols on my iPod ever since. God Bless You, PDX for being the greatest airport in America, what with your speedy lines, friendly TSA associates and free Wi-Fi. Would that every airport was this cheery this holiday season.
I am anxious to get home to my wife, who has been tried and tested this Christmas season. She's had to run and organize and buy for and cook for all of the holiday events while I jetted around and ate at restaurants and gained weight. She is truly a saint.
Sitting here quietly listening to carols has really made me start to feel the Christmas spirit. It is amazing how in my job how quickly Christmas dissolves into "holiday" and isn't a time of joy and celebration, but a time to make lots of money. Don't get me wrong. I love capitalism. But it is nice too to stop and smell the poinsettias. Sitting here listening to carols has also made me realized that I really dislike the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas," no matter who sings it or how. It is a bit repetitive. I have also realized that Clay Aiken sings "What Child is This" like NOBODY'S business. And that Sufjan Stephens makes me smile. And that I'm gonna buy these shoes, for my Mama, please.
So Happy Christmas to all of my three readers! (Including that guy from the Heygood's who checks my blog because I mentioned them once. I have no ill will.) May you have a wonderful holiday. And as my gift to you, a lovely remembrance of Christmas Past (well, last year.) ENJOY! (Please see the next post.)
