A bird, two boxes and a cup

Amy and I have a problem in our new home. The walls are big and expansive and beige. They were newly painted when we moved in and were professionally done, so there are no bubbles, or drips or painting outside the line. As much as we love a colorful house, we just don't want to repaint them unless they are professionally done. I would be willing to do the work, but then Amy would be driven mad by all of the mistakes, of which there would be many. So for now we are leaving them beige.

So we needed art. Art is expensive!! We also needed big art. Big art is really expensive!! I know on all the design shows they just paint their own original art, but we are not very creative. So we decided to do something we don't ever do. Get crafty.

Amy had seen a collage in West Elm of interesting framed images all grouped together. We liked it, but again...expensive! So we went to Ikea, bought some frames and some fabric, went to Michael's for some colored paper, did some photocopying, nailing and stapling and this is what we came up with:
We were pretty pleased and felt like it would be easy to change in the future if we needed to. And the whole thing cost about $50.

First I was going to one of those awesome blogs that posts step by step pictures, but I got bored of taking all of those photos after 2. So here is what I've got.
Here is Amy cutting out the bird silhouette. She is a whiz with the craft knife. (Purchased at Michael's for just this event!)
Here is me nailing Ikea fabric to Ikea wood frames. (I realize I am not really in the picture. Amy was still cutting. But see the hammer? And nails? I was doing that.) PS. Don't you love that fabric?

When Noel woke up this morning and saw it he started laughing like it was the funniest thing he had ever seen and said "There is a bird on our wall! A bird, two boxes and a cup!" Critics!

Many other chores were ignored on this Saturday, but we fell much better about the room now. Here it is in context:
Eat your heart out Paige Davis!!!

Also, don't get used to me posting every day. I can't promise it will continue.

I was excited when I started reading this because I thought, "They're not crafty. Yay! Finally a blogger I can relate to." But then you made something really good that does actually look hard and creative and so now I'm mad because I guess I really am the only blogger who can't do anything.

So I love this! I love the two boxes most of all, are they both fabric stretched over frames! Big and full of color, nice. But I think my favorite was the cup, was that bought as is or were there pictures not taken of Amy chopping up a news paper finding the best most coolest words to describe you all. Let us know!

The cup was one of the things taken directly from the West Elm catalog. I literally took the miniscule images from the catalog (of that and the bird) and blew them up again and again. Then made a pattern and cut them out. The cup contains copies of pages from my favorite books (Farenheit 451, The Grapes of Wrath and To Kill a Mockingbird), copied on various degrees of bigness. The most stressful part of the whole project was figuring our which page I was going to copy (cause I'm nerdy like that).

I am so impressed! It looks awesome! I DO love that fabric--how did you know!

(and I love that your kids thought it was so funny to have some boxes, a bird and a cup on your wall--aren't kids the best critics of art? They will be endeared to these pieces when they think of your charming home in Portland. . . when they are back, living in Provo. . .good times, good times)

I also love the fact that the copies come from excellent literature. Art with meaning and layers?! I'm very impressed.

How dare you make something so cute and then comment on facebook about people being to artsy for their own good? Amy, you downplayed how much work went into it. Copies of pages from your favorite books... that is so inspired. Love it!

I am in this exact predicament, and you may have just saved me lots of money. Nicely done.
